Museo Casa Masaccio Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea è felice di presentare la restituzione pubblica della residenza di Manjot Kaur, artista indiana che vive e lavora a Chandigarh.
A metà tra una esposizione e un open studio, / ɛnˈtrɒpɪk / (entropic) mette l’accento su alcuni temi ricorrenti della pratica dell’artista che si muove tra natura e cultura, arte e scienza, dimensione globale e personale. Il linguaggio scientifico viene utilizzato per sovvertire l’immagine delle cose ed osservare il mutare continuo della natura: i processi naturali e i cambiamenti di stato sono infatti fondamentali per Kaur per richiamare l’attenzione sul senso dell’esistenza e sulle leggi che la regolano. Anche il titolo dell’esposizione, che prende in prestito una definizione della meccanica statistica (entropia), descrive un sistema in mutamento verso il massimo disordine interno, evidenziando come l’aspetto temporale sia connaturato in queste riflessioni.

Grazie ad un incontro con il pubblico, mediato dalla curatrice Serena Trinchero, e l’esposizione di alcune opere e progetti in fieri, l’artista mostra l’interdipendenza tra le sue ricerche, finalizzate ad analizzare la complessità della società contemporanea e ad enfatizzare il ruolo delle nostre azioni. Anche, e più che mai in questa occasione volutamente ibrida, Kaur sottolinea il valore del processo, luogo prediletto di indagine, la cui ricchezza risiede proprio nell’impossibilità di definizione certa e nello sviluppo in accordo con il tempo.
/ ɛnˈtrɒpɪk / (entropic) vive su un doppio binario tra Italia e India sebbene il suo sguardo intenda abbracciare una più ampia comprensione della situazione ambientale attuale legate al cambiamento climatico. Venezia e il fenomeno dell’acqua alta costituiscono lo spunto da cui nasce l’installazione multimediale It’s happening, while rotating and revolving…(2018), attorno alla quale l’esposizione si svolge e riavvolge in un susseguirsi di rimandi e variazioni. L’opera sollecita la percezione dello spettatore che rimane in bilico tra la danza armonica delle immagini prese al microscopio di elementi naturali e il suono minaccioso del segnale acustico che avverte dell’aumento della marea.

Il soggiorno di Manjot Kaur è parte del progetto internazionale di scambio, Casa Masaccio in Residency, sostenuto dall’istituzione e dedicato alla mobilità di artisti e curatori nazionali e internazionali. In questa occasione la residenza è supportata e realizzata in collaborazione con Clark House Initiative (Bombay) e il curatore Sumesh Sharma.

Manjot Kaur (1989), ha ottenuto una laurea magistrale in pittura presso il Government College of Art, Chandigarh, nel 2012. Kaur è un’artista multidisciplinare che grazie all’utilizzo di diversi media, come libro d’artista, video, sonoro, installazione e performance, indaga antropologicamente temi che riguardano l’ambiente, l’identità e l’esistenza.
Artista in residenza 2018 presso Unidee, Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, ha preso parte a numerose iniziative internazionali Khoj International Artists’ Association – Peers18, New Delhi; Mythos – Land Art Biel/Bienne, Switzerland 2017; Gram Art Project – funded by FICA, India 2016; Harmony Art Foundation, Mumbai, India 2015; Global Nomadic Art Project, India 2015; and Tellusart, Sweden 2009.
Tra le maggiori collettive si ricordano Water – A video exhibition, Geumgang Nature Art Biennale, South Korea 2016; Cairotronica- International Symposium of Electronic and New Media arts, Cairo, Egypt, 2016; 28th National Exhibition of Contemporary Art, SCZCC, Nagpur, India 2015.
Nel 2018 è stata premiata con il Professional Annual Award, Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi; l’anno precendente ha ricevuto il 30 Under 30 Award , Hindustan Times Youth Forum; Sohan Qadri Fellowship, oltre al Professional and Student Annual Award.

Museo Casa Masaccio Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea is delighted to present the public restitution of the residence of Manjot Kaur, an Indian artist who lives and works in Chandigarh.
Halfway between an exhibition and an open studio, / ɛnˈtrɒpɪk / (entropic) focuses on some recurring themes of the artist’s practice that moves between nature and culture, art and science, global and personal dimension. Scientific language is used to subvert the image of things and observe the continuous change of nature: natural processes and changes of state are in fact fundamental for Kaur to recall attention to the meaning of existence and the laws that regulate it. Also the exhibition’s title, which borrows a definition of statistical mechanics, describes a system in change towards the maximum internal disorder, highlighting how the temporal aspect is inherent in these reflections.
Throughout a public encounter, mediated by the curator Serena Trinchero, and the exhibition of some works and projects in progress, the artist shows the interdependence between her research, aimed at analyzing the complexity of contemporary society and emphasizing the role of our actions. Also, and more than ever on this occasion purposely hybrid, Kaur emphasizes the value of process, her favourite place of investigation, whose richness lies in the impossibility of certain definition and its development according to time.
/ ɛnˈtrɒpɪk / (entropic) lives on a double track between Italy and India, although its vision intends to embrace a wider understanding of the current environmental situation linked to climate change. Venice and the phenomenon of high water are the starting point for the multimedia installation It’s happening, while rotating and revolving… (2018), around which the exhibition unrolls and rewinds in a succession of references and variations. The work solicits the perception of the spectator who remains poised between the harmonic dance of the images taken under the microscope of natural elements and the threatening sound of the acoustic signal that warns of the increase of the tide.
Kaur’s sojourn is part of and international exchange program, Casa Masaccio in Residency, held by the institution and dedicated to the international mobility of national and international artists and curators. On this occasion the residency is supported and realized, in a cross institution exchange, by Clark House Initiative (Bombay) and Museo Casa Masaccio (San Giovanni Valdarno).
Manjot Kaur (b.1989), MFA (University Gold Medal) in Painting, Government College of Art, Chandigarh, 2012. She is a multidisciplinary artist, making Artist Books’, Video, Sound, Installation, and Performance, inquiring the anthropological concerns of environment, identity, and existence.
